Seminar for Ambassadors of Latin America and the Caribbean Hosted by Korea Eximbank

□ The Bank hosted the Korea Eximbank Seminar for Ambassadors of Latin America and the Caribbean on September 6 at the Hotel Shilla.

○ The seminar, attended by 16 ambassadors of Latin America and the Caribbean to Korea including Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina, was held to establish and strengthen networks for market expansion of Korea companies into Latin America and the Caribbean.

□ During the seminar, Chairman Kim expressed keen desire for economic cooperation and development in the regions and the bank’s support system for the green growth industry and EDCF support plans for Latin America and the Caribbean were presented.

□ Chairman Kim stated, “Latin America and the Caribbean countries have abundant natural resources which require supporting infrastructure in order to drive national development. Korea Eximbank will actively provide financing for Korean companies participating in large-scale plant and resource development projects in the region.”

□ Brazilian Ambassador to Korea Edmundo Fujita stated, “Brazil is hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics and is a land of opportunities with abundant natural resources such as iron ore. Recently, a greater number of Korean companies are entering the region for natural resource development and blast furnace steel mill construction and as such, active financial assistance from Korea Eximbank is essential.”

○ During Ambassador Fujita’s visit to the bank on July 20, he expressed the need for close cooperation among Korea Eximbank and Latin America and the Caribbean countries.

□ Since 2009, Korea Eximbank has made great efforts to assist Korean companies expand into the region and broaden networks, including provision of approximately KRW 12 trillion to projects in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

○ Moreover, with demand increasing in the region for development of green industries such as biofuels, more financial assistance is anticipated to be provided under Korea Eximbank’s green finance program and EDCF.***

*** A total of KRW 194.7 billion will be approved in EDCF funding by 2011 for the region. So far, a total of KRW 67.3 billion in EDCF funding has been approved for projects such as the intelligent transportation system establishment project in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the renewable energy transmission and distribution project in Nicaragua.
