Volunteers from the Export-Import Bank of Korea (Korea Eximbank) helped serve over 200 bowls of tteokguk* at Tasuhan Chaeumteo**.
* Tteokguk is a Korean soup with sliced rice cakes traditionally eaten on the morning of Lunar New Year. Eating the soup is symbolic of becoming a year older.
** Tasuhan Chaeumteo (meaning warm shelter) is a soup kitchen for the homeless where free meals are served.
Chairman Yong-Hwan Kim, volunteers from Korea Eximbank, and the staff of Tasuhan Chaeumteo served meals, washed dishes, and cleaned the facility to assist those in need.
After meals, Korea Eximbank also donated 280 20kg-bags of rice to Tasuhan Chaeumteo to contribute to their efforts of serving the homeless.
Since 2005, Korea Eximbank has volunteered at soup kitchens and donated rice to such centers in Seoul such as Kwangya House.
Chairman Kim expressed sympathy for those who didn’t have the means to visit their hometowns for the holiday and added that Korea Eximbank, in fulfilling its responsibilities as a government institution, will do what it can to assist the community.
Korea Eximbank actively contributes to community service activities to assist disadvantaged groups. In addition to volunteering at soup kitchens, the Bank funds medical surgery for multicultural families through the “SEED Social Contribution Program,” a program in which 0.5% of profits through the financing of large corporations is donated to assist those in need.
