□ On July 16, Chairman Kim Dongsoo of Korea Eximbank and President Masayuki Oku of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation SMBC signed a cooperation agreement to jointly support large-scale international projects such as plants.
○This agreement entails cooperation for project financing in large overseas projects participated by Korean companies; ship finance, export finance, foreign investments; development of natural resources; and sharing of information regarding projects.
□ SMBC is the third largest bank in Japan and 19th in the world in terms of assets and capital. SMBC is an international commercial bank having the Asian headquarter in Singapore and is active in providing project financing for large-scale projects in Asia and the Middle East.
※ As of March 2009, SMBC had 115.8 trillion yen in assets and 4.5 trillion yen in capital.
□ A representative of Korea Eximbank stated, "Korean and Japanese companies are increasingly forming consortiums in the plant market. Co-financing by Korea Eximbank and SMBC, facilitated by this agreement, will increase competitiveness of Korean-Japanese consortiums to win contracts."
